Tellurium Q ™ have won the “Cable of the Year” award from the UK magazine HiFi+ and we are excited to be able to offer this very high value for money range of cables here at Sound Galleries.

According to the review in HiFi+ the rationale behind Tellurium Q ™ is based on the belief that the preservation of the phase relationship in a musical signal is the most important element. This belief certainly seems to have paid off in the success with which music is conveyed through these cables.

We have tried out their cables here and found that even the lowest priced ‘Blue’ speaker cable performed extremely well in our state of the art Avantgarde Duo Omega G2 based system.

Flat, thin and easily concealed, their speaker cables are just the sort of cable product our customers have been asking for. Starting at just €20 per meter, at last we have a top performing cable at a very reasonable price.

It isn’t surprising that their top of the range cables perform even better and for many those gains in performance will be worth the extra price. However these build on the strengths of the entry level cables and follow the same philosophy of attaching importance to preserving the phase relationships.

At Sound Galleries we often suggest our customers start out with lower priced cables and get used to those cables in their system before trying out the better cables in a range. That way our customers know for sure whether the benefits of the better cables are justify the extra expense for them.

Regular visitors to Sound Galleries will know that we’ve always tended to favour large band drivers for their top to bottom coherence, lightning speed and explosive dynamics. These are sometimes incorrectly referred to as “full range”; but of course, no single driver can truly cover the entire frequency range. This is why companies such as Rethm and Zu augment theirs with additional active bass units and, in the case of Zu, tweeters. However Voxativ seem to have come so close that their driver might well truly deserve the term “full range”. Augmented by a cleverly designed cabinet, which is beautifully built by Schimmel Pianos, this all German designed and built Ampeggio speaker is unlikely to have you reaching for a subwoofer or super-tweeter. You can read the full story about Voxativ and their collaboration with Schimmel Pianos here.

As Srajan reported in his review, even with placement well away from the wall “solid, snappy bass was achieved down to 40hz”. This will be considerably enhanced with wall reinforcement all the way down to the specified 20hz. Treble also reaches right up to the 20khz paper specification. This was further confirmed in Srajan’s review. Listening to his reference recording for the high’s, the struck triangles in the “Promenade” from Vassili Tsabropolous’ Melos [ECM], he found that the Ampeggio’s ” let the tones ring out just as long, the initial rise of struck metal flare up just as sharply” as his usual reference speaker which uses a separate tweeter.

Wait a minute, isn’t that truly “full range”?

Yes, indeed it is. At last truly full range sound from a speaker with just a single driver, with all the advantages that implies. No crossovers with their inherent timing and phase distortions and no difficulty in matching different drivers together. Just pure sound with perfect swing and timing. This is probably one of the reasons the 125 year old Piano company Schimmel found the Voxativ drivers to be the only drivers to satisfy them when reproducing piano.

These drivers are designed and built from scratch by a lady: Inès Adler. As an engineer with a masters degree and numerous patents to her name as well as a background in working for Mercedes Benz, you will appreciate why she was able to meet the challenge. Her passion for music and desire to create speakers that are beautiful enough to grace any home is her motivation.

Sound Galleries Features – A new concept

We are introducing a new concept at Sound Galleries, which we’re referring to as “features”.

For a limited period of time we will feature a new product which we’re excited about and we think you will be too. The original idea of Sound Galleries was always that talented designers could exhibit their art here, just as art galleries do, so that you can all have a chance to appreciate it. We believe that great design in audio products is synonymous with great art.

We wanted to kick off this new concept with something really special and we believe we have achieved that. Our first feature beginning from next week will be the amazing Ampeggio Speakers from Voxativ and Schimmel Piano’s. So I urge you to take advantage of this limited time offer to experience the Ampeggio speakers for yourself here at Sound Galleries beginning Monday 11th October.

A note to other designers and manufacturers: If you are interested in participating in a future Sound Galleries feature, please contact us.

iPad as a high quality digital source

Geoffrey Armstrong

If you have a camera connection kit you can use it to connect your iPad to a USB DAC. So you get digital audio output without the need of an extra component such as the Wadia iTransport. The ultimate quality will depend on how good your USB dac is and the rest of your system. I got very good results with a very low cost USB DAC from KingRex. This is small enough that you might want to use it “on the go” with some nice portable speakers.

This trick won’t work with the iPod Touch or iPhone, since they don’t support the camera connection kit. For those you’ll still need a Wadia iTransort to get the digital feed.

It’s really nice to prop the iPad up and see the album covers as the music plays.
